Case Study: Rochedale Landfill

The Brisbane City Council with Brisbane Waste Innovations Alliance partner Thiess Services engaged The Solar Guys to design, supply and install a 35kW solar power system at their Rochedale Landfill facility.

Two buildings were identified for the project with 31kW on the main building and 4kW on a smaller building.

A key innovation of the installation was the use of the latest, most environmentally friendly photovoltaic framing system from Swiss manufacturer Montavent. This is the largest Montavent installation in Australia to date.

Installation of the solar power system was completed in November 2010.

Case Study: Mackay TAFE

Project Overview

The Queensland Governmentʼs Q Build group called for tenders to install a 50kW solar power system onto a TAFE building in Mackay.

Working with ESCO, The Solar Guys were successful and managed to complete the entire project in just three weeks including a complete weather sensor station and datalogging system.

Installation of the solar power system was completed in August 2010.

Case Study: Queensland Government Building Maroochydore

Project Overview

The Queensland Governmentʼs Project Services group has engaged Hutchinson Builders to construct a new office building in Maroochydore. The project has a strong focus on environmental performance.

A Five Star Green Star rating has been achieved at the design stage with Six Star Green Star rating now a possibility.

The Solar Guys have been awarded the project to design, supply and install a 60kW grid-connected solar power system on the roof of the building to offset the buildingʼs electricity consumption.

Installation of the solar power system is scheduled to be completed in December 2010.

Case Study: Nursery Traders, Capalaba Qld

Nursery Traders engaged The Solar Guys to undertake a savings projection for the installation of a large solar power system, which led to The Solar Guys designing, supplying and installing a complete 48kW grid- connected photovoltaic system

Case Study: Somerville House School

Solar Power 12kW – South Brisbane, Qld

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Somerville House school solar panels
Somerville House girls school in South Brisbane built a new Junior Boarding House in late 2009 that was opened in early 2010.

A key aspect of the project was installation of a 12kW solar power system on the roof to take advantage of the Federal Governement’s National Solar Schools program. Requirements for this program included a comprehensive data logging system capable of transmitting hour by hour power production information to a web portal.

Sunshine Coast Stadium 30kW – Kawana, Qld

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Kawana Solar
The Sunshine Coast Regional Council has built a new grandstand at Kawana with significant environmentally sustainable design (ESD) initiatives.

A key aspect of the project was installation of a 30kW solar power system on the roof to take advantage of the Queensland Governement’s Solar Bonus Scheme feed-in tariff. Requirements for this scheme included three-phase installation and no more than 30,000W of installed solar capacity.

Solar Hot Water – South Brisbane, Qld

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Somerville House girls school in South Brisbane built a new Junior Boarding House in late 2009 that was opened in early 2010.
Somerville House commercial solar hot water project
A key aspect of the project was installation of a solar / gas hybrid hot water system to supply the almost 100 teenage residents of the boarding house.

High performance evacuated tube solar collectors were chosen to supply solar heated water in a two stage Rotex hot water delivery system. The first stage is a solar pre-heat and the second stage is a gas finishing plant powered by two commercial grade Bosch 32 series instantaneous gas burners.

The Solar Guys working with Rotex designed and supplied the system, which was installed by the major plumbing contractor on the project. The system was designed to deliver an annual solar contribution of over 60% so as to minimise natural gas usage on the site.

Small Business showing how its done

Nursery Traders solar panels on roofSolar panels on commercial factory roof

We’re always happy to celebrate the achievements of our customers, especially when there are taking sustainability and savings to a whole new level. In early 2010 we installed a 48kW Kyocera Solar Power system for a local business called Nursery Traders located in Capalaba, Queensland.

Nursery Traders had implemented a detailed and successful water management plan years before but now wanted to change the way they created and used energy to help further to achieve the world’s best practice in sound environmental management.

We been excited to help with meet the goals they have set for their company, as well as work alongside such an innovative and committed family business as they see the fruits of their labour and promote good sustainability practices in business.

Recently, Nursery Traders was nominated for the Banksia Environmental Award in the area of ‘Leading in Sustainability – Setting the Standard in Small Organisations’ as well as representing Queensland in the People’s Choice Award. Although they weren’t successful at this time of adding to their trophy cabinets, we congratulate them on the nominations and look forward to updating you on future achievements for this passionate company.

What is a 1.5kW Solar System?

You would have seen it advertised heavily across many different mediums but have you ever stopped to wonder what really was a ‘1.5kW’ solar power system?

Many people find the foray into solar confusing and when you are bombarded with random sizes, prices and outlandish guarantees it can be all seem overwhelming actually understanding what you are getting for your money.

So what is this solar energy system?

A kilowatt (kW) is the theoretical unit that energy is measured in. So a 1.5kW system is the measurement of the 1.5 kilowatts (or 1500 watts) of combined DC power – as rated by the size of the solar panels.

This photo was taken on a beautiful Spring day at the Brisbane City Councils Green Heart Fair. The event was held at Mt Gravatt Showgrounds on the 16th October 2011, from 10am to 4pm.

Held twice a year the BCC Green Heart Fairs encourage people to live and learn sustainably in their homes and understand the resources and products available to do this. Run through the CitySmart initiative, these fairs show that if we all make a small change in our own homes, we can contribute to the greater Sustainability of the Brisbane City area.

There are free plants to be given away, live music, local action groups and Council and Government Departments helping to demonstrate the ‘green’ way of living.

The next Green Heart Fair will be help on Brisbane’s North-side in Chermside on Sunday May 13th 2012. We’ll see you there!

Brisbane Home Show Wash-up

We were overwhelmed with the enquiry at the Courier Mail Brisbane Home Show and would like to thank everyone who came to get information from The Solar Guys and the support they have given our ideas and solar solutions.

It was a big trade show mostly because of the enquiry we had for the my SunBank battery storage solutions and how people can see this working for them in their home or business. My Sunbank is all about making solar work financially and give back control to the customer in times of high power prices and low feed-in tariff rates. With such a low grid price incentive for excess kilowatt-hours sold from a solar system, its time for consumers to look harder at how solar can work with the assistance of battery storage to use solar power after dark. Why You Must Consider Solar Power Storage

We all know power prices keep going up and aren’t expected to fall anytime soon. So, it’s this simple fact that is spurring everyone to look at alternatives and what they can do to help counteract the skyrocketing cost of living.

Solar power and solar hot water are the obvious choices as an addition for any home as we can take the heat or light energy from the sun and use this to our advantage. Solar has been used for many years as a way for people to save electricity and make money from their roofs. Continue reading “Why You Must Consider Solar Power Storage” »
